Square Pegs by: DTL Staff
|
Putting square pegs in round holes or round pegs in square holes does not work. Why would we put soccer players on the field if they don’t know how to kick and control a ball? They won’t just be round pegs, they will stick out like a sore thumb.
Here’s a fun game that two or three can play on any piece of grass.
Organization
- Depending on age and ability, mark out three 5 to 7-yard squares 10 – 15 yards apart.
- Players chip the ball from one square to another
- The “chipper” scores a point if the ball lands in the square or is controlled by the receiver in the square
- The receiver then plays the ball to the next square (if there are only two, then plays back to the first square)
- If you start by playing the ball counter-clockwise after a period change to a clockwise direction
As time goes on additional rules and adjustments can be made
- Increase the distance between squares
- Award two points to the receivers if they successfully control the ball with the first touch and then chip into the next square with the second touch
Points to Ponder
- Concentrate fully on getting the chip technique right – head down and dig under the ball
- First controlling touch by the receiver is vital – control the ball slightly away from the body to set up the next touch which is, wherever possible, the chip.
- Good game for field players and goalkeepers
Have fun!
